Newport Marina & RV Park

Oct. 7-9

Oregon RVing Women held our final rally of the year at Newport, Oregon. Several of the ladies arrived on Thursday and the weather promised to be good. We set up our rigs, arranged the club house, and began our ritual of visiting to catch up on what had happened during the past month.

The club house was adorned with pictures of Gina and Shirley's trip to Africa. Shirley also had her computer with more pictures that she showed to interested members. Marilyn also hung a quilt she had made of "Georgie's Friends". Georgie is Marilyn's dog. The pictures were of various members with their dog(s) and Georgie. It was appreciated by all.

The rally really started on Friday, with a head count of 32. For dinner, the officers provided pizza and the other members brought food that would go with the pizza. As usual we had plenty of desserts including ice cream with home made hot fudge sauce. Introductions of new members and guests were made; one Cascadia member also came from Seattle. The evening was filled with games. Janet had constructed a crossword puzzle based on interesting but unknown facts of various members. "Who was it that rode with the Hell's Angels in the 1960's"?

Saturday, after a breakfast of muffins and fruit, people scattered to do their own thing. Being at the beach, Newport has lots of interesting places to investigate. Some of the members went to the OSU Mark Hatfield Marine Science Center where there is a small aquarium of marine animals plus many other interactive exhibits. The highlight was watching Ursula, the octopus, being fed. When that happens she changes color.   Other places of interest were: Oregon Coast Aquarium, The Wax Museum, Ripley’s“Believe It or Not, the beach and of course shopping. We gathered later for our usual potluck dinner after which several of the members played Square 9 (some for a quarter a hand). Others played a game called "A Ticket to Ride", a train game. Janet also awarded cute prizes for her crossword puzzle. June reported on a 2012 calendar she had made for members to download. The calendar contained the dates of the rallies, dates that the registration for the ralliesis due and membersbirthdays. Each month contained a picture from previous rallies. The weather had turned to off and on sun, vs. rain. At night the sky really opened up, dumping heavy rain on the campground.

Sunday, again started with coffee, muffins and fruit. The only activity planned for that day was a late lunch at the Fish Tail restaurant. We were very fortunate to eat there. Although the restaurant generally closes at 3pm, the manager told us if we came around 2:30 she would be able to feed around 30 people and she would stay as long as needed; consequently we had the place to ourselves. The food was home cooked and gooood!!! After eating, some of the members broused at the shops at Pirates Cove. That evening, we again gathered for games and later Jeannette played her ukulele and led some camp songs.

Monday, is the day we meet in the morning for coffee and goodbyes. The weather was really lousy; however a couple of the members stayed on for an extra day or two. For most of us, we will not see each other until March when we begin our new season of rallies. Some hope to get together on their own. As always this rally was a great success.

Tournaments and salads were the focus of this rally.

Friday night salad get together resulted in enough salad for lunch on Sat. and Sun. also.

Tournaments were played in poker, nine square, ladder golf, and bean bag toss. All members and four guests participated in at least one of the tournaments and everyone enjoyed the camaraderie of playing and cheering on others. The big winner was Janet Horton-Payne who won the nine square tournament and with her partner, June Willoughby, won the ladder golf. Ginger Jennings won the Poker Tournament. Elaine Almquist was the champion of the bean bag toss. Pam Mayne was the runner up champion as she took second in all the tournaments except the nine square tournament, although she had to share runner up status in ladder golf with her partner, Beckey Beckey. June Willoughby was runner up in the nine square tournament. Homemade prizes were awarded to all winners at Sunday night dinner.

Other activities enjoyed included kayaking on the lake and playing at the local casino which was holding it’s annual salmon bake. The weekend also included our annual meeting and a session on the RVW website led by Paulette Beliveau.

WE ALL HAVE WEB FEET!

June 10-12

The Oregon Chapter outing at Elkton, OR proved that we all have web feet! Even our two members from Utah. We had a couple of clear days, and one day where it continued to rain on and off during the day and night. But that didn’t deter us from fishing (not very successfully) as much as possible; playing cards; learning how to play Mexican Train; and putting together two jigsaw puzzles.

There were 35 of us that gathered at one of our favorite campgrounds where our rigs back up to the Umpqua River, so we can sit in our lawn chairs and just watch the water go by. There is also a fire ring with lots of seating round it and wood to burn, so there was a fire on and off all weekend. We did our usual hors d’oeuvres Friday evening. Because the theme for the weekend was “Rio Ole’”, many of the snacks had chilies, tortillas, etc. The campground does not have a clubhouse, but there is a covered pavilion, so we all sat around, after filling our plates and told about what we had done and where we had been since we were last together.

On Saturday morning the hosts provided breakfast burritos and fruit. After a brief meeting, at which we discussed next year’s camping sites, we all either walked or drove about a mile to a replica of Fort Umpqua. The fort was originally across the river, where it partially burned and then eventually was washed away by a flood before 1900. The construction of the fort has been done by volunteers using the same construction methods and materials as the original fort, with the exception of a few present day code requirements, such as cement foundations. We all then went on to the Butterfly Pavilion, where, because of the cool wet weather, there were not a great number of butterflies, however, they had just hatched out a few painted lady butterflies, which were observed feasting on sliced oranges. The gift shop did very well that day as we all managed to find gifts for our family/friends/self from bubble wands, greeting cards, jewelry, to books, etc. That afternoon the hosts provided some games and prizes. There was a great deal of speculation on why the participants needed to bring a roll of toilet paper for one of the games. That evening keeping in tune with the theme, the hosts provided chicken enchiladas, and everyone else joined in by bringing fajitas, tortillas, chili, taco salad, etc.   Mexican Train was again tried by the learners, as well as cards and jigsaw puzzles.

Sunday we brought our own breakfast down to the pavilion and again ate together, after which some had to take off because of other commitments, but most of us remained, playing games in the pavilion, fishing in the rain, walking up into town. That evening we all went up into town for dinner together.

On Monday morning we again had breakfast together and packed up and left wishing everyone safe travels and hoping to see each other next month.

Bandon, Oregon

April 8,9,10

The Oregon Chapter of RVW met at the Bandon by the Sea RV Park in Bandon, Oregon. We had a wonderful group of women from Oregon, Utah, California, and Washington attending this event. Fortunately we didn’t have rain but still had some very breezy weather.

Friday evening we had our usual finger foods with a wide variety from which to sample. Plans were finalized for various activities on Saturday and making sure everyone had a ride to their chosen destination. Many stayed in the clubhouse and played a variety of games.

Saturday morning following breakfast, several women attended a lapidary workshop arranged by the hosts in conjunction with the RV Park and learned how to make a cabochon. Those who participated loved this experience. Others traveled to points of interest including Old Town Bandon and of course the ocean beaches.

Saturday evening started with a potluck dinner that was ample and delicious. After dinner we had an auction of items donated by members including a 2 night stay donated by the RV Park. Our master auctioneer, Gina Masciantonio, had everyone laughing uncontrollably as they parted with their money. This activity raised $182 for our chapter. This was followed by games in the clubhouse.

Sunday morning the group enjoyed three egg casseroles and a variety of muffins provided by the rally hosts, Dee Hamer and Dottie Allen. All plans were finalized for the day as well as dinner reservations. The attendees again enjoyed games and seeing local sites. Some had to leave early so we said our goodbyes to them. Sunday evening 27 of us went to dinner at a local restaurant located by the ocean. Afterward we returned to the clubhouse for more games.

Monday we had leftovers for breakfast and then it was time to breakdown camp, say our farewells and wish safe travels. – Dee Hamer and Dottie Allen

Hi Way Haven RV Park

Sutherlin

March 18-20, 2011

A great time was had by all.  Some members are visiting with each other for the first time this year.  Fun was had catching up with each other and sharing stories.

Friday we had finger foods and got together and had delicious food as usual.  Games and socializing followed.  Since we are in Oregon the rain was on and off most of the weekend. A few gals dusted off their skills and enjoyed the pool table in the clubroom.

Saturday, with the help of Sandra Brown, we car pooled to the Wildlife Safari and got up close to some real exciting animals, Bears, Giraffes, Rhinos, Emus, and all kinds of deer, elk etc.  They have great scenery and many animals from all over the world.  We all had fun going thru the gift shops and spent too much!  Some ladies drove to the 7 Feathers Casino to play and leave a donation.

Dinner on Saturday night was Dutch Oven Enchilada Pie provided by the hosts. We all brought beautiful salads, vegetables, bread and desserts. It was a great meal and plenty of it, as usual.  The RV Park furnished the giant movie screen and June Willoughby provided the CD, so we watched "Secretariat", a fine movie just right for Sat night.  Of course, some members played games and worked on puzzles.

Sunday after coffee cakes and waffles we followed Barbara Hicks out to her daughters Alpaca Farm where we got to stand with the Alpaca and feel their wool and look into those big beautiful eyes. Great fun!  Barbara had her book on Alpacas published and some of us bought an autographed copy of her book.  Some also bought some socks or scarves made out of the wool. It was all very interesting and good fun.  Sunday night dinner was out to a Mexican cafe and the food was wonderful and a great time was had. Back to the RV Park and more fun and games.

Monday morning we ate some left over goodies and coffee and said our goodbyes.  Some stayed an extra day to avoid some bad weather and some of us just had to get going.  Some members couldn't make the Rally because of RV trouble or weather conditions but those who made it had a wonderful time.

See you down the road.  Pam Mayne & Ann Pearson
